President Duma Boko and President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia
Feb 25, 2026

The Kazungula Border, a strategic river crossing that played a key role in the political liberation of southern Africa, is now being transformed into a model for the continent’s economic liberation.

On Tuesday, President Duma Boko and President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia stood on the banks of the iconic confluence of the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers, at the world’s only quadripoint, to officially launch the Kazungula Bridge Authority (KBA). The new Authority will ensure sustainable operations at one of Africa’s most vital trade links, including a 24-hour one-stop border post, long-term maintenance, and continued growth.

The two countries have agreed to jointly sponsor the construction and operation of the bridge infrastructure. Botswana will host the Authority’s headquarters, while Zambia will hold the position of Executive Director. The establishment of the Authority comes five years after the Kazungula Bridge was first commissioned between the two nations.

The launch ceremony, symbolically held at the old Kazungula ferry ramp, provided a moment for both presidents to reflect on the region’s liberation struggles, shaped by colonial powers who drew borders that divided the continent. They called on all African people to unite, reminding them that they are “one people” and that “Africa will rule the world.”

President Boko emphasised, “We are not merely commissioning an Authority; we are consolidating a partnership.” He added that the new institution embeds governance within opportunity and positions both nations to fully benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area.
