Overview

Botswana has a significant solar potential receiving over 3,200 hours of sunshine per year with an average insolation on a flat surface of 21 MJ/m. This rate of irradiation is among the highest in the world. There is also wind potential. Regions with the highest wind potential are located in the South-West and Eastern parts of Botswana, with average wind speeds above 7 m/s, and a wind power density above 200 W/m2 . In the energy sector the National Development Plan 11 in Botswana focuses on increasing self-reliance on the country’s energy resources.Hence, Botswana is looking to diversify and support the development of the economy by securing competitive, cost-reflective and sustainable electricity prices for industry, services and households.

Identification of Local Flora & Fauna

Overview

The department  of  Museum offers an identification service of small animals and plant species, rocks and minerals to the public. Members of the public bring samples for identification. The service also assists in knowing and taking stock of what the country has. Problem pests and weeds are also identified through this service.

How do I get this service?
  • Bring a sample of the item to be identified
  • The customer is notified of the results by telephone, post, e-mail or they may come in person

Environmental Research Permit

Overview

The permit is acquired by institutions or individuals who wish to conduct research in protected areas.

Who is eligible?

Citizen and non-citizen above 18 years old

How do I get this service?
  • Download, complete and submit Research Application form together with supporting documents
  • If the application is approved, a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) will be sent to the prospective researcher for signing
  • Upon receipt of the signed MoA, the Research Permit will be issued
What supporting documents are required?
  • Citizen-certified copies of national identity document
  • Non-citizen - valid copy of passports
  • Detailed research proposal and up-to-date curriculum vitae

Animal Transit Permit

Overview

The Permit is used primarily by businesses that wish to transport animals/wildlife in and out of Botswana. The Permit is necessary as it restricts movement of animals/wildlife from one place to another. This Permit covers land and air transport. There are no restrictions on the number of animals to be transported and the Permit does not include domestic animals.

Botswana citizens and non-citizens wishing to transport animals in and out of Botswana.

How do I get this service?

Download, complete and submit Animal Transit Application Form to Department of Wildlife and National Parks.

What supporting documents are required?
  • Animal/Wildlife Import Permit for those who import
  • Animal/Wildlife Export Permit for those who export
  • Certified Copy of National Identity Card (Omang)
  • Certified Copy of Passport
  • Physical Examination of Animal before import and export
How long will this service take?

Five (5) working days

How much does it cost?

Fees differ according to the animal products and species as per Wildlife Act of 1992.

Animal/Wildlife Import Permit

Overview

The transport of animal/wildlife into Botswana requires a permit. The permit is necessary to restrict movement of animals/wildlife into Botswana. Those interested in the permit must contact the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) licensing office at the Department of Wildlife and National Parks for guidance regarding import and export of CITES controlled species. This permit covers land and air modes of transport. Exotic species are not allowed to be imported to Botswana. The service is mostly used by Game Ranchers.

Commercial Fishing License

Overview

The licence is granted by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks to those who wish to fish for profit and permission to use gillnet. This licence applies to those engaged in commercial fishing including those who own Fish Farms. Open fishing season is between March 1st and December 31st, annually.

Citizens eighteen (18) years of age and above

Download, complete and submit the Commercial Fishing License Form with supporting documentation

  • A certified copy of a valid National Identity card (Omang)
